Those Two Magical Words: Just Because

To give and receive gifts “just because” is to capture the true art of surprise. Why are out-of-the-blue gestures so important?

Ah, those two magical words … just because. Or better yet, those three magical words … just because gifts! We love to hear those words uttered from a favorite person’s mouth because there is an element of surprise as well as the knowledge that a plan took place for the sole purpose of making us feel good.

We’ve written about why surprises are so important because they help our brains to create happiness. And to be the recipient of a thoughtful surprise from someone makes us feel happy, light, and almost “high on life” for moments, days, or even longer.

Think about the incredible feeling you would have if you heard or read in text the following scenarios:

• “Be ready by eight… and wear something nice!”
• “Pack your bags for the weekend. Bring warm clothes, dress-up clothes, hiking shoes, and heels!”
• “Close your eyes… Keep them closed… OK, now open!”

What might await in these enticing situations? Perhaps:

• A surprise, elegant dinner with a gorgeous view. And then, a night out on the town afterward.
• A weekend of glamping, hiking, and nights out at local restaurants and bars.
• A set of wrapped gifts to be opened one per day for seven days to extend the celebration of life.

Then, hearing why these amazing evenings, weekends, and weeks were planned is the icing on the cake … just because. Those two words are magical to the recipient’s ear. A birthday was not involved. An anniversary was not a factor. The giver wanted to do or give something special for the recipient “just because” he or she wanted to, for seemingly no reason at all. Or just because…

• I wanted to!
• It’s fun!
• It’s something different.
• You deserve it.
• You needed a pick me up.
• I love you!

Whatever the reason or the season, giving and receiving any sort of gift “just because” is an experience that should not be missed. If you could give a surprise to someone special, right now, who would it be?
